Remote working
Skyward is a remote-first company. We don’t have an office, but if we ever decide to get one, we’ll always welcome our team to work from home, or away from home.
Wherever you choose to work, we expect you to have fast and reliable internet. You need the ability to focus on your work and be in a quiet enough environment to take calls.
Coffee shops are a great option if you’d prefer to get out of the house and be around others.
Nomadic working
If you’d prefer to travel while working, make sure you plan ahead. Make sure you have access to solid wi-fi and a quiet work environment.
Make sure you’re differentiating between work and travel time. Just because you can take your work with you, doesn’t mean you should. Make sure your work quality is on-par with results from your home office. If it’s not, just take holiday time! Holiday time is there for a reason.
Flex time
You’re free to set your own working schedule. We simply expect that you’re available to communicate with others. Make sure the rest of the team knows your general availability, and that you’re available for team catch-ups.
If you’re unavailable for a half day, or more, we request that you record it as vacation time. This helps prevent burnout and makes sure you get the rest you deserve.
1:1s
It’s important to keep up with your teammates and, since we’re remote, that’s even more critical to dedicate time to getting to know each other.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
Who are they and what do they do?
What have they been working on recently and what are the challenges they faced?
What would they like to learn next?
What do they do for fun outside of work?
Tools we use
We use a few tools to make our lives easier:
Gmail & Google Calendar
Notion
Slack
Linear
Levelling up
Skyward is proud to deliver first-class solutions at the cutting edge of the web. This means lots of our time is spent learning new things and figuring out better solutions!
If a project would benefit from taking some time to learn something new, let us know and do it.
If there’s something that you’d like to learn with less tangible benefits, maybe a new technology that we don’t use but might benefit us in the future, let us know, and we’ll try to set aside time for you to learn.
Working Publicly
We welcome (and encourage) our team to build their own public presence.
We’ll ask you to contribute to our blog from time to time to talk about specific topics or client projects. We will credit any work you do while at Skyward.
We welcome you to share any lessons or experiences you’ve had with us. If you’d like to share client work you’ve completed, please ask us first so we can confirm you’re not sharing any sensitive information.
Work/Life Balance
We’ll never measure success based on how many hours you can cram into a week. Find the schedule that suits your needs and gives you the best results.
If you haven’t worked flexibly before, and need some assistance setting your schedule, let us know, and we can help you create a workday that works around you.
If you’re starting to burn out, take some vacation time! It’s there for a reason.
